Migrantour – special Scienza Migrante 2.0 – 21 June
It is often from small steps taken one after the other that one can arrive at weaving networks that go beyond what one had imagined. And it is from this ability that the international Migrantour network was formed, a project born in Turin and now present in more than twenty cities across Europe. Through the story of Rosina, the project’s coordinator, we have started this new season of Scienza Migrante 2.0 and it is with enthusiasm that we propose a touring event around the city.
What Scienza Migrante 2.0 and the responsible tourism project Migrantour have in common is the centrality of both the stories and viewpoints of migrant people. If through our articles we take you on a discovery of societies and cultures of the world, Migrantour will introduce you directly to the different migrant communities on the territory. How? By walking and narrating. People with a migrant background become intercultural companions of urban itineraries they design and through which they show us meaningful places to them. They also tell us their vision of the city also through their experience of migration. Over the years, intercultural dialogue has proved to be an excellent tool for participants in the walks to get to know and open up to the other, but above all, for the migrant protagonists to gain confidence.
With this intercultural walk we want to focus on a specific category of migrant people: refugees. It is estimated that there are now more than 120 million worldwide, fleeing armed conflicts, persecution or the effects of climate change. A number that, due to new humanitarian crises and the worsening of existing ones, is bound to increase. Sudan, Palestine, Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Venezuela are just some of the countries from which people are forced to flee. And it is precisely on the occasion of World Refugee Day on 20 June that – on Saturday 21 June – our intercultural walk will take place.
The morning’s intercultural companion will be Giovanna who, years ago, thanks to Migrantour rediscovered and reconstructed her Italian and Brazilian origins. Through her itinerary she will tell us about her great passion for contemporary art and, at each stage, describe works or artists belonging to different cultures. What will these stages be? We will not reveal the details to pique your curiosity! However, the walk will begin in the courtyard of the Rector’s Office of the University of Turin, the headquarters of the university’s political and administrative bodies and of the historical archives, where we will tell you about UNITO’s projects concerning the reception of international students. We will proceed to the Porta Palazzo district, Europe’s largest open market where multiple migrant communities have found a home and work for generations and where over sixty languages and dialects can be heard. We will stroll through the market stalls and stop at places significant to the largest migrant communities in the area.
When we reach the end, it will be time for an aperitif, which we will offer you at Jigeenyi, a bar and social restaurant in Via Borgo Dora 3/o where African cuisines are the protagonists.
To ensure an enjoyable experience where interaction is possible, the number of participants is limited. We invite you to book by Friday 20 June at 12:00 am.
