Droughts, heatwaves, melting ice, rising sea levels, floods, extreme weather events, conflicts and forced migration are just some of the most obvious effects of climate change. According to the IPCC – Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – there are tipping points that, if exceeded, can lead to irreversible consequences. Some are already underway and are responsible for extreme domino effects such as the accelerated melting of the Arctic ice cap, and that of the Greenland ice cap which is currently the main cause of rising sea levels. Climate change affects the seasonal monsoon cycles on which many crops depend, determining the migration of affected populations. The Amazon rainforest, also known as \u2018the lungs of the world\u2019, is now emitting more carbon dioxide than it can absorb, due to the high rates of deforestation. This coupled with increasing rates of drought and flooding, is leading to higher levels of malnutrition, hunger and population displacement. <\/span>It\u2019s Now or Never<\/i><\/b>, the title of an IPCC report that said we must pick global greenhouse gas emissions, including methane, by 2025 to limit global warming to 1.5 \u00b0C. Every productive sector must reduce its emissions, and we must all play our part in deciding what to buy, eat or how to move. What are we at globally?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In collaboration with <\/span>CentroScienza<\/b> we will discuss this important topic on board the <\/span>Tram of Science<\/i><\/b>,<\/span> a vintage tram that will take you through the streets of the city centre. The common thread of your tour will be the encounter between science and poetry. Magdalena Maria Kubas – researcher at the University of Turin and part of the Scienza Migrante 2.0 team – will introduce you to a selection of texts dealing with climate change, its effects and perception and the relationship between humans and the environment. Similarly, science will be present with the speeches of Elisa Palazzi – president of the Scientific Committee of CentroScienza – and Ilaria Stoppa – science communicator – who will provide a historical overview of the phenomenon and discuss the uncontrolled exploitation of nature, our responsibilities, and the actions being taken to mitigate its effects and adapt to change. Science tells us that we have the capacity to repair, protect and choose a different path.
