Ricercator3 alla Spina – 12 March – Off Topic – h. 20:00

What if, in addition to a traditional menu from which you could order food and drink as usual, you could also order interesting anecdotes about physics, mathematics, biotechnology, biomedicine, computer science, veterinary medicine or literature?

In order to maintain the dissemination of science as a central element of our project, and with the intention of giving faces and stories to the migration that brings researchers from all over the world to our universities, we have decided to bring our migrant scientists directly to your tables by collaborating with a peculiar event that, since 2017, has made science a dish to be served at your tables!

This is “Ricercator3 alla Spina”, a multidisciplinary dissemination format that takes advantage of the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by the OFF TOPIC cultural hub, a space for culture and aggregation, to entertain the public with short talks on the diverse worlds of science and research. And in this case, we will also bring you a touch of internationality through the origins of the  migrant scientists that goes from Iran and Turkey to Mexico, from Ukraine and Poland to Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt and China.

But how does it work?

In addition to the traditional menu through which you will be able to choose among the wide range of gastronomy and the selection of wines and beers of the OFF TOPIC Bistro, you will also find a ‘scientific menu’ in which the topics chosen by the protagonists in the room will be illustrated in the form of scientific dishes, each with a title and its ingredients in the form of a brief description. By choosing the dish that most inspires you based on your interests or on what arouses the greatest curiosity in you, you will also be choosing a researcher who will come to talk to you about it, directly at your table. But it won’t be the usual lecture! The principles behind the event are dialogue and reciprocity, and while these scientific curiosities will be explained to you in a playful and informal way, the fun will be in comparing the different points of view and curiosities that come from the audience in the room. The event will be a unique opportunity to break down existing stereotypes about researchers and migration, and  to highlight the universal value of science and its ability to unite beyond borders, prejudices and barriers that too often limit the free movement of people and ideas.

In short, if the key to personal and community growth is openness to sharing and exchanging ideas, this is essential in science, where international collaboration is fundamental for the advancement of research.

The ‘Ricercator3 alla Spina’ format comes from an idea of Claudio Forte, professor at UniTo’s Department of Veterinary Sciences, is developed by the social enterprise Psiquadro and organised by the Department of Veterinary Sciences in collaboration with CentroScienza. It is also part of the ‘CUBO – Le culture del cibo’ project, which aims to unite research, teaching and third mission in the area of food habits.
